Well Dressings

13 - 19 August

Experience the Ancient Art of Well Dressing in Barlow

Every summer, Barlow proudly celebrates one of Derbyshire’s oldest and most cherished traditions: dressing three wells with stunning, hand-crafted displays of natural art.

At the junction of Hackney Lane and Wilkin Hill stands the Coronation Tree, marking the heart of the original village. Just opposite is the village pump, installed in 1840, a lasting symbol of Barlow’s connection to its fresh water springs. This spot is home to one of the three wells dressed during the Barlow Carnival—a tradition dating back to at least 1572, when church records first mentioned it.

The origins of well dressing remain a mystery. Some believe it began as ancient pagan rituals to give thanks for clean water, while others trace it to medieval Christian blessings. Whatever its beginnings, well dressing has endured for centuries, passed down through generations as a celebration of gratitude, community, and artistic creativity.

Each well dressing in Barlow features a unique scene, crafted entirely from natural materials—flowers, seeds, grasses, leaves, and more—carefully pressed into clay-covered boards. Barlow’s tradition is distinctive for its use of whole flowers rather than individual petals, as seen in other places. This approach complements the village’s larger wells, making the process both striking and efficient.

These vibrant displays are a feast for the eyes and a heartfelt expression of local pride. They draw visitors from near and far to witness a living tradition where creativity, heritage, and community spirit come together.

Visit any of the Well Dressings between 8–12 August to peek behind the scenes and watch as these beautiful displays take shape.

Donations collected at each well support local charities and good causes, helping to ensure this treasured tradition continues to thrive for generations to come.

The wells will be unveiled on the morning of Wednesday, 13 August, and remain on display until the following Tuesday. Don’t miss your chance to see them in all their glory—they won’t be around forever and soon begin to dry out!

Join us on Wednesday 13 August to see the traditional Blessing of the Wells service and procession.

The Small Well

Though not actually that small, it’s affectionately known locally as the “Children’s Well.” Some members of the current team began their well-dressing journey as young children themselves.

Over the years, the well has had several homes within the village — once standing opposite the Hare & Hounds pub and outside the Methodist Chapel, both now sadly closed. Today, it is proudly situated outside the village hall.
